Bilinga Wood (Opepe): Properties, Uses & How to Buy

Bilinga is a tropical hardwood from the family Rubiaceae. The wood is famous for being considerably hard and very durable and has good resistance to insects and marine borers. Whether you are looking for the best place to buy Bilinga wood at cheap rates or want to know more about this exotic wood species, here you go. About Bilinga Wood
Bilinga, also called Opepe in some regions, is a tropical hardwood native to tropical Africa. The wood is also extensively grown in other tropical regions, including South America and Pacific Islands. Bilinga trees are about 100-160 ft tall and have a trunk diameter of 3-6 ft. The wood is quite hard, durable and used for a variety of purposes, ranging from flooring to furniture making and boatbuilding.

Bilinga Wood Properties and Characteristics

Bilinga is a hardwood and typically very hard and durable. It has a 1,550 lbf (6,890 N) Janka rating. The wood is also said to have good resistance to insects and marine borers.
As for color, Bilinga heartwood ranges from golden brown to orange, while the sapwood is light yellow and easily distinguished. The heartwood tends to darken over time. Bilinga grain is generally interlocked or irregular and the wood has a coarse texture. The wood is rated as moderately durable to extremely durable and is resistant to insect attacks, moisture and rot
Bilinga is generally easy to work with, however, interlocked grain can sometimes lead to tearouts when working. It turns, glues, and finishes well, but doesn’t bend efficiently.
